Devotions by Kara Lassen Oliver, Passing It On

Week 5:

Beginning of the Week

Opening Family Time: Show everyone the palm branch

The Palm Branch symbolizes goodness and victory. when Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, the people shouted and celebrated this arrival right there in the road. They didn’t have to be in the right building or have the right candles or music. They cut palm branches and waved them like flags. They didn’t go buy a fancy carpet; they spread their cloaks on the ground.

Have someone read: Matthew 21:8-9

A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Daily Practice: Age Appropriate Practices:

  • Toddler: When you see leaves waving in the wind, say thank-you to God out loud.
  • Elementary: Let the trees remind you that you can pray any time. Pray a prater each time you see leaves waving in the wind.
  • Middle School/High School: You don’t have to limit praising God and praying to Sunday mornings. choose a time and place other than Sunday at church when you will give thanks to God each day.
  • Adult: Make daily prayer – praise and petition – your devotion this week.

Have someone write this prayer out for a prominent place in the house or hotel room if you are away. Take it in the car with you while traveling home or to a new destination. Have palm leafs drawn on the page as well.

Pray:

Dear God, I want to praise you every day. Amen.
